More than 10 million people in the United States experience domestic violence each year, and women bear the disproportionate weight of it — accounting for roughly three-quarters of victims, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Perhaps more striking is a statistic that often goes unspoken in these conversations: more than 1 in 3 women in the U.S., nearly 43.5 million, will experience sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in her lifetime. Behind every one of those numbers is a woman who, in many cases, did not initially recognize what was happening to her as abuse at all.
